Myanmar has informed ICJ about the steps to protect the Rohingya

rohingyaMyanmar has informed the International Court of Justice (ICJ) about the steps it has taken to protect the Rohingya people. The country has submitted a report to the court in this regard. However, the steps taken in the report were not disclosed. This is the first such report from Myanmar submitted to the ICJ.

The news agency Reuters reported this information. A Reuters report said the matter had been confirmed by the ICJ.
In the wake of the Gambia case against Myanmar over the Rohingya issue, the ICJ found evidence of genocide on January 23. And instructed Myanmar to take four-point interim measures. Myanmar submitted its first report after the directive.

The Reuters report said the measures taken by Myanmar within four months were mentioned in the report. However, the ICJ did not say exactly what was said in the report. An official from Myanmar’s foreign ministry told Reuters the matter was a state secret. Earlier on Friday, a Myanmar military official said they had provided “complete and accurate” information to the government about the report.

The Gambia has filed a lawsuit in the ICJ alleging that Myanmar carried out genocide against the Rohingya people. The ICJ held a hearing on the matter in December. Later, on January 23, a 16-judge panel issued four interim orders. Besides, the court was asked to inform Myanmar about the steps it has taken as per the court order within four months.

The intermediate measures for rohingya are:

1. According to Rule 2 of the Genocide Charter, Myanmar must refrain from killing, injuring or traumatizing the Rohingya within its borders, wiping out the entire population or part of it, and imposing restrictions on their birth.
2. Myanmar must ensure that the military or any other irregular armed unit within its borders or anyone else in their support does not commit genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, incite to genocide openly or secretly, attempt genocide or collaborate with genocide.
3. In the light of Rule 2 of the Genocide Charter, all evidence related to the allegation of genocide must be protected and attempts to destroy it must be prevented.
4. Within four months of the issuance of this order, the court must be informed of the steps taken by Myanmar in accordance with the court order. From then until the final decision of the court, the matter has to be reported every six months.
