Once there was a selfish giant. He had a large and beautiful garden. The garden was full of soft green grass. There were varieties of flowers in the garden. Children used to play in the garden. One day the giant saw the children playing in the garden. He became angry and forbade them to play. The children stopped playing there. As a result, the garden lost its beautiful charm. The giant invited the children to play in the garden and the garden again became full of beautiful flowers.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা এক স্বার্থপর দৈত্য ছিল। তার একটি বড় ও সুন্দর বাগান ছিল। বাগানটি সবুজ ও নরম ঘাসে পরিপূর্ণ ছিল। বাগানে বিভিন্ন রকমের ফুল ছিল। ছোট ছোট ছেলে মেয়েরা প্রায়ই বাগানে খেলা করত। একদিন দৈত্য দেখতে পেল যে শিশুরা তার বাগানে খেলা করছে। সে রাগান্বিত হল এবং শিশুদের খেলতে নিষেধ করে দিল। শিশুরা সেখানে খেলাধুলা করা বন্ধ করে দিল। ফলে, বাগানটি তার সৌন্দর্য হারাল। দৈত্য শিশুদের তার বাগানে খেলার আমন্ত্রণ জানাল এবং বাগানটি পুনরায় বিভিন্ন রকম ফুলে ভরে উঠল।

Once there lived a poor woodcutter. He was very honest. He maintained his family by selling wood in the market. One day he was working beside a river. His axe fell into the deep water. He sat beside the river and was crying. The river goddess appeared before him. She gave him a golden axe, but he did not accept it. The goddess again brought a common axe. The honest woodcutter then took it and began to cut wood happily.

 

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা একজন গরীব কাঠুরে বাস করত। সে খুব সৎ ছিল। সে বাজারে কাঠ বিক্রয় করে তার পরিবার দেখাশোনা করত। নদীর তীরে একদিন সে কাজ করছিল। তার কুড়ালটি গভীর পানিতে পড়ে গিয়েছিল। সে নদীর পাশে বসে কাঁদছিল। জলদেবী তার সামনে দেখা দিলেন। জলদেবী তাকে একটি স্বর্ণের কুড়াল দিলেন, কিন্তু সে (কাঠুরে) এটা গ্রহণ করল না। জল দেবী আবার একটা সাধারণ কুড়াল নিয়ে তাকে দিলেন। তারপর সৎ কাঠুরে এটা নিল এবং সুখী মনে কাঠ কাটা শুরু করল।

An English poet was staying in Italy for the benefit of his health. During his stay, he received an unpaid letter from his friend, which contained nothing but some words. The poet had to pay double postage, so he became angry. He wanted to teach his friend a good lesson. So, he procured a heavy stone and packed it up in a box. Then he sent it to his friend with the words on it “Carriage to be paid on delivery”. His friend thought that the contents of the parcel were valuable. With great hope, he opened the box. To his utter surprise, he found nothing but an ordinary stone. Thus, the poet taught his friend a good lesson.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ: একজন ইংরেজ কবি তার স্বাস্থ্য ভালো রাখার জন্য ইতালিতে অবস্থান করছিলেন। সেখানে অবস্থানকালীন সময়ে তিনি তার বন্ধুর কাছ থেকে ডাকমাশুল অপরিশোধিত একটি চিঠি পেলেন যাতে সামান্য কয়েকটি কথা ছাড়া আর কিছু ছিল না। কবিকে দ্বিগুণ ডাকমাশুল পরিশোধ করতে হওয়ায় তিনি ক্রুদ্ধ হলেন। তিনি তার বন্ধুকে একটি ভালো শিক্ষা দিতে চাইলেন। তাই তিনি একটি ভারি পাথর সংগ্রহ করে তা একটি বাক্সে ভরলেন। তারপর তিনি তাতে “বিতরণের সময় মাশুল পরিশোধযোগ্য” লিখে বন্ধুকে পাঠিয়ে  দিলেন। তার বন্ধু ভাবলো যে পার্সেলের ভেতর মূল্যবান কিছু আছে। বিরাট আশা নিয়ে সে বাক্সটি খুললো। চরম বিস্ময়ে সে দেখলো যে সাধারণ একটি পাথর ছাড়া আর কিছু নেই। এভাবে, কবি তার বন্ধুকে একটি উপযুক্ত শিক্ষা দিলেন।

Dr. Alfred Nobel was born on 21st October 1833 at Stockholm in Sweden. He was an engineer and chemist. His father Emanuel Nobel was an architect and researcher. He had ammunition business at Leningrad. In 1850 Alfred Nobel joined his father’s company. After some years Alfred Nobel invented Dynamite. He earned a lot of money from Dynamite business. He undertook a plan to give an award for encouraging the creative work for setting up peace in the world. This award was named after Alfred Nobel and it was called “Nobel Prize”. The Nobel Prize has been given since 1901.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : ড. আলফ্রেড নোবেল ১৮৩৩ সালের ২১ অক্টোবর সুইডেনের স্টকহোমে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি ছিলেন একজন প্রকৌশলী ও রসায়নবিদ (কেমিস্ট)। তার বাবা ইমানুয়েল নোবেল ছিলেন একজন স্থপতি ও গবেষক। লেনিনগ্রাদে তার অস্ত্রের ব্যবসা ছিল। ১৮৫০ সালে আলফ্রেড নোবেল তার বাবার কোম্পানিতে যোগ দেন। কয়েক বছর পর আলফ্রেড নোবেল ডিনামাইট আবিষ্কার করেন। তিনি ডিনামাইট ব্যবসা হতে প্রচুর টাকা আয় করেন। তিনি বিশ্বে শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য সৃজনশীল কাজকে উৎসাহিত করতে একটি পুরস্কার দেওয়ার পরিকল্পনা করেন। এই পুরস্কারকে আলফ্রেড নোবেল-এর নামানুসারে নামকরণ করা হয় এবং এটাকে নোবেল পুরস্কার বলা হয়। ১৯০১ সাল হতে নোবেল পুরস্কার দেওয়া হচ্ছে।

Once Sheikh Saadi was going to Baghdad with a group of rich merchant. The merchant had their goods and a lot of money. They travelled for twelve days without any trouble. On the thirteenth day a gang of robbers attacked them. The robbers took away all the goods and money from the merchants. Then the leader of the robbers came to Saadi. He ordered Saadi to give all he had to him. He had bundle of books and some money with him. Saikh Saadi handed him the bundle of books and the money without fear. Saadi then said, “I hope that you will make good use of these books.”

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা শেখ সাদী একদল ধনী বণিকের সাথে বাগদাদ যাচ্ছিলেন। বণিকদের মালপত্র ও প্রচুর অর্থ ছিল। কোনো বাধা বিপত্তি ছাড়াই তারা বারো দিন ভ্রমণ করল। তেরোতম দিনে একদল ডাকাত তাদের আক্রমণ করল। ডাকাতরা বণিকদের কাছ থেকে সব মালপত্র ও অর্থ নিয়ে গেল। তারপর ডাকাত সরদার সাদীর নিকট আসল। সে সাদীকে তাঁর যা কিছু আছে তা তাকে দিয়ে দিতে বললো। তাঁর সাথে ছিল বইয়ের বান্ডিল ও কিছু অর্থ, শেখ সাদী নির্ভয়ে তার হাতে বইয়ের বান্ডিল ও অর্থ দিলেন। সাদী তখন বললেন, “আমি আশা করি তুমি এই বইগুলোর যথার্থ ব্যবহার করবে।”

A long time ago the town of Hamelin in Germany was faced with a great problem. It became full of rats.  The people of the town came to the town Hall. They said to the Mayor to do something about rats. The Mayor called a meeting of the councillors. The Mayor and the councillors talked about the problem. But they could not find a way out. At that moment there was a knock at the door. The Mayor said, “Come in.” The stranger entered the hall.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : অনেকদিন আগে জার্মানির হ্যামেলিন শহর এক বিরাট সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হয়েছিল। এটা ইঁদুরে ভরে গিয়েছিল। শহরের জনগণ টাউন হলে আসল। তারা মেয়রকে ইঁদুরের ব্যাপারে কিছু করতে বললো। মেয়র কাউন্সিলরদের নিয়ে সভা ডাকলেন। মেয়র এবং কাউন্সিলররা সমস্যা সম্পর্কে কথা বললেন। কিন্তু তারা কোনো সমাধান খুঁজে বের করতে পারলেন না। ঐ মুহূর্তে দরজায় একটা টোকার শব্দ শোনা গেল। মেয়র বললেন, “ভেতরে আসুন”। আগন্তুক হলে প্রবেশ করল।

Mount Everest is the highest peak in the Himalayas. It was named after George Everest, an Englishman. It is over 29000 feet high. Many people tried to conquer the mountain but could not. Many of them lost their lives. At last Hillary and Tensing led an expedition. They set out on March 10, 1953. After two months of difficult climbing they were able to reach the top. They felt extremely happy when they stood there. Thus they went down in the history as the conquerors of Everest.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : মাউন্ট এভারেস্ট হিমালয়ের সর্বোচ্চ চূড়া। জর্জ এভারেস্ট নামক এক ইংরেজের নামে এর নাম রাখা হয়। এটা ২৯০০০ ফুটেরও বেশি উঁচু। অনেকেই পর্বতটিকে জয়ের চেষ্টা করেছিল কিন্তু পারেনি। অনেকেই তাদের জীবন হারায়। অবশেষে, হিলারী ও তেনজিং একটি অভিযান পরিচালনা করেন। তাঁরা ১৯৫৩ সালের ১০ মার্চ যাত্রা করেন। দুই মাসের কঠোর আরোহনের পর তাঁরা চূড়ায় পৌঁছাতে সক্ষম হন। তাঁদের অনেক ভালো লাগছিল যখন তারা ওখানে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন। এভাবেই তাঁরা এভারেস্ট জয়ী হিসেবে ইতিহাসে নাম লেখান।

Once upon a time, two friends were passing through a forest. They were talking about their love for each other. Suddenly a bear came. The first friend climbed up a tree. The latter could not climb up a tree. He did not find any way. He lay down on the ground and pretended to be dead. The bear smelt his ears, nose and face. The bear thought him to be dead. It went away.

 

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা দুই বন্ধু এক বনের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। তারা পরস্পরের প্রতি তাদের ভালোবাসার কথা বলছিল। হঠাৎ এক ভালুক এল। প্রথম বন্ধু একটি গাছে উঠে পড়লো। পরেরজন গাছে উঠতে পারত না। সে কোনো পথ খুঁজে পেল না। সে মাটিতে শুয়ে পড়ে মরে যাবার ভান করল। ভালুকটি তার কান, নাক এবং মুখ শুঁকলো। ভালুকটি তাকে মৃত মনে করলো। এটি চলে গেল।

The world is full of great men. They have come from different places of the world. Dr Mohammad Shahidullah was one of those who contributed a lot towards the Bangla language. This great scholar was born on 10 July, 1885. He was the greatest scholar of Bengal. He passed the Entrance Examination in 1904. After that he did his B.A, M.A and B.L respectively. He was awarded the Doctorate degree from Sorborne University in 1928. He then joined the University of Dhaka as a professor of Sanskrit and Bangla. His ‘Bangla Shahitter Katha’ is the first well arranged history of Bangla literature.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : পৃথিবী মহামানবে ভরপুর। তাঁরা দুনিয়ার বিভিন্ন স্থান হতে এসেছেন। ড. মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ তাঁদের একজন বাংলা ভাষায় যাদের প্রচুর অবদান রয়েছে। এই মহান ব্যক্তিত্ব ১৮৮৬ সালের ১০ জুলাই জন্ম গ্রহণ করেন। তিনি বাংলার শ্রেষ্ঠ পণ্ডিত। তিনি ১৯০৪ সালে প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষা পাস করেন। এরপর তিনি ধারাবাহিকভাবে বি.এ, এম.এ ও বি.এল পাস করেন। ১৯২৮ সালে সরবর্ণ ইউনির্ভাসিটি হতে তাঁকে ডক্টরেট উপাধিতে ভূষিত করা হয়। এরপর তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে সংস্কৃত ও বাংলার অধ্যাপক হিসেবে যোগদান করেন। তাঁর “বাংলা সাহিত্যের কথা” বাংলা সাহিত্যের প্রথম সুসজ্জিত ইতিহাস।

Once two rats found a loaf of bread. They could not divide the bread as each of them wanted the larger share of it. They quarrelled for sometime over their issue. One of them suggested to go to the monkey who had a scale. Accordingly, they went to the monkey to divide the bread piece properly. The cunning monkey divided the piece in such a way that it was not equally divided. He cut a small part of the piece and ate that instantly. The rats realized the monkey’s trick and ordered the monkey to stop it. The monkey stopped his deception. Then the monkey claimed the rest of the bread as his charge.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদিন দুটি ইঁদুর এক টুকরা পাউরুটি খুঁজে পেল। তারা রুটির টুকরাটিকে ভাগ করতে পারছিল না এ জন্য যে তারা দু’জনই এর বড় অংশটি পেতে চাচ্ছিল। এ বিষয়টি নিয়ে তারা অনেকক্ষণ ঝগড়া করল। তাদের মধ্যে একজন বানর এর কাছে যাওয়ার পরামর্শ দিল যার একটি দাড়ি পাল্লা ছিল। সেভাবেই তারা বানরের কাছে গেল রুটিকে ঠিকমত ভাগ করতে। চালাক বানর রুটিটিকে এমনভাবে ভাগ করল যে এটা কোনভাবেই সমান হচ্ছিল না। সে এটার ছোট একটা অংশ কেটে তখনই খেয়ে ফেলল। ইঁদুর দুটি বানরের চালাকি ধরতে পেরেছিল এবং এটা বন্ধ করতে বানরকে আদেশ দিল। বানরটি তার প্রতারণা বন্ধ করল। তারপর বানরটি তার কাজের পারিশ্রমিক হিসাবে রুটির বাকি টুকরাটি দাবি করল।

Akbar was born in 1542 at Amarkoat in Sindh. His full name was Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar. He was the grandson of Babar. His father was Humayun. He had not much education. He was skilled in warfare. He ascended the throne of Delhi at the age of 13. He won the 2nd Panipath battle in 1556. It was the greatest victory in his life. He ruled over 50 years in India.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ: আকবর ১৫৪২ সালে সিন্ধুর অমরকোটে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তার পুরো নাম ছিল জালালউদ্দিন মোহাম্মদ আকবর। তিনি ছিলেন বাবরের নাতি। তার বাবা ছিলেন হুমায়ূন। তার যথেষ্ট শিক্ষা ছিল না। তিনি যুদ্ধশৈলীতে দক্ষ ছিলেন। তিনি ১৩ বছর বয়সে দিল্লীর সিংহাসনে আরোহণ করেন। তিনি ১৫৫৬ সালে পানিপথের দ্বিতীয় যুদ্ধ জয় করেন। এটি ছিল তার জীবনের শ্রেষ্ঠ বিজয়। তিনি ভারতে ৫০ বছর রাজত্ব করেন।

A crow was very thirsty and wanted to drink water. He flew from one place to another in search of water. At last he found a jar in a garden having some water. But it was at the bottom and out of his reach. The crow tried to overturn the jar again and again but failed. As he was leaving the jar in despair, he noticed a heap of pebbles nearby. Then he hit upon a plan. He took some pebbles and started dropping them into the jar. When the water came to the mouth of the jar, the crow drank to his heart full. Then he flew away happily.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একটি কাক খুব তৃষ্ণার্ত ছিল এবং পানি পান করতে চাচ্ছিল। সে পানির খোঁজে একস্থান থেকে অন্য স্থানে ওড়াউড়ি করছিল। শেষ পর্যন্ত সে একটি বাগানে কিছু পানি ভর্তি একটি কলস দেখতে পেল। কিন্তু পানি ছিল একদম তলানিতে এবং তার নাগালের বাইরে। কাকটি বারবার কলসটিকে ওল্টানোর চেষ্টা করলো কিন্তু ব্যর্থ হলো। যখন সে হতাশায় কলসটিকে ছেড়ে যাচ্ছিল তখন সে কাছেই নুড়িপাথরের একটা স্তূপ দেখলো। তখন তার মাথায় একটি বুদ্ধি এল। সে কিছু নুড়ি নিল এবং কলসের মধ্যে ফেলতে শুরু করলো। যখন পানি কলসটির মুখের কাছে আসলো, কাকটি প্রাণভরে পানি পান করলো। তারপর সে খুশিমনে উড়ে চলে গেল।

When he had no other alternative, he started doing work, but it was too late.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : অনেক বছর আগে আমেরিকার একটি গ্রামে একজন যুবক বাস করত। তার নাম ছিল রিপ ভান উইংকেল। সে অনেক সহজ-সরল ছিল এবং শিশুদের অনেক পছন্দ করত। গ্রামের শিশুরাও তাকে অনেক ভালোবাসত। রিপ অনেক অলস ছিল এবং কাজ অপছন্দ করত। তার অলস অভ্যাসগুলি তার বউকে রাগিয়ে তুলেছিল। পরিবারকে দেখে শুনে রাখার জন্য তাকে টাকা রোজগার করতে বলল। কিন্তু সে তার বউ এর কথা শুনল না। সে তার সকল সম্পত্তি হারাল। যখন তার আর কোনো বিকল্প রাস্তা ছিল না, তখন সে কাজ করতে শুরু করেছিল কিন্তু এটা অনেক দেরি হয়ে গিয়েছিল।

One day a lion was sleeping in a cave. A mouse was playing nearby. The lion caught hold of the mouse and wanted to kill it. The mouse became very much frightened. But he did not lose heart. He requested the lion to excuse him for the first time. The lion felt pity for the mouse and let it go. One night the mouse heard the roar of a lion. The mouse went there and found the lion trapped in a net. The mouse cut the rope with his sharp teeth and set the lion free.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদিন একটা গুহার ভিতর একটা সিংহ ঘুমিয়ে ছিল। পাশেই একটা ইঁদুর খেলা করছিল। সিংহ ইঁদুরটিকে ধরে ফেলল এবং হত্যা করতে চাইল। ইঁদুরটি অনেক বেশি ভয় পেয়ে গেল। কিন্তু সে আশাহত হল না। সে সিংহের কাছে প্রথম বারের মত তাকে ক্ষমা করার জন্য অনুরোধ করল। সিংহটির ইঁদুরের উপর করুণা হল এবং এটাকে ছেড়ে দিল। একদিন রাতে ইঁদুর সিংহের গর্জন শুনতে পেল। ইঁদুর সেখানে গেল এবং দেখতে পেল সিংহটি একটি জালের ফাঁদে আটকা পড়েছে। ইঁদুর তার ধারালো দাঁত দিয়ে দড়িগুলোকে কেটে ফেলল এবং সিংহটিকে মুক্ত করে দিল।

A poor woman once came to Buddha. She asked him whether he could give her any medicine to restore her dead child to life. The holy man was touched by the great sorrow of the woman. He told her that there was only one medicine which could revive her son. He told her to bring a handful of mustard seeds from a house where death had never entered. The sorrowful mother went from door to door seeking the mustard seeds but at every door she met with sad replies. One said, ÒI have lost my husband.” Another said, ÒOur youngest child died last year.” She returned with heavy heart to the great teacher and told him the result of her great search. The Buddha told her affectionately that she must not think much of her own grief since sorrow and death are common to all.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা এক অসহায় মহিলা বুদ্ধের নিকট আসলো। সে তাঁর কাছে জানতে চাইলো যে তিনি তাকে তার ছেলেকে জীবন্ত করার কোনো ঔষধ দিতে পারবেন কি না। মহিলার গভীর শোক পবিত্র ব্যক্তিটিকে ছুঁয়ে গেল। তিনি তাকে বললেন যে একটাই ঔষধ আছে যা তার ছেলেকে জীবিত করতে পারে। তিনি তাকে এমন ঘর থেকে এক মুঠো সরিষার বীজ আনতে বললেন যে ঘরে কখনো মৃত্যু প্রবেশ করেনি। দুঃখী মা দ্বারে দ্বারে যায় সরিষা বীজের খোঁজে কিন্তু প্রতিটি দ্বারেই সে বিষণ্ন জবাব পায়। একজন বলল, “আমি আমার স্বামী হারিয়েছি।” অন্যজন বলল, “গত বছর আমাদের সবচেয়ে ছোট সন্তানটি মারা যায়।” সে দুঃখ ভারাক্রান্ত মন নিয়ে মহান গুরুর কাছে ফিরে আসল এবং তাঁকে তার ব্যাপক অনুসন্ধানের ফলাফল জানালো। বুদ্ধ তাকে স্নেহের সাথে বললেন নিজের দুঃখ নিয়ে বেশি চিন্তা না করতে কারণ দুঃখ ও মৃত্যু সবার জন্য স্বাভাবিক।

Once a dog stole a piece of meat from a butcher’s shop. The dog was very happy to have it. He was crossing a bridge over a canal. He looked down in the canal and saw another dog carrying a piece of meat in its mouth. The dog stopped on the bridge and looked down very carefully. He became very greedy to get the other piece of meat. In fact, he saw his own image in the clear water of the canal. So, he howled at the image. At this, the piece of meat fell into the water. The dog jumped following the piece of meat but in vain.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদিন একটি কুকুর কসাই এর দোকান থেকে মাংসের একটি টুকরা চুরি করল। টুকরাটি পেয়ে কুকুরটি অনেক খুশি হয়েছিল। সে খালের উপরে একটি সেতু পার হচ্ছিল। সে নিচে খালের দিকে তাকাল এবং দেখতে পেল যে অন্য একটি কুকুরও মুখে মাংস নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। কুকুরটি সেতুটির উপর থামল এবং খুব সতর্কতার সাথে নিচের দিকে তাকাল। সে অন্য আরেকটি মাংশের টুকরা পাওয়ার জন্য আরো অনেক বেশি লোভী হয়ে গেল। বস্তুত, সে খালের পরিষ্কার পানিতে তার নিজের প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখতে পেল। তাই সে প্রতিচ্ছবিটি দেখে গর্জন করে উঠলো। এরজন্য মাংসের টুকরাটি পানিতে পড়ে গেল। কুকুরটি মাংসের টুকরার উপর লাফিয়ে পড়ল কিন্তু ব্যর্থ হল।

Once there lived a Sultan in a country. He wanted to appoint an honest man as his tax collector. So he asked for his wise chief minister’s advice. Then he invited applications. A number of people applied for the job. The applicants were asked to meet the Sultan one by one. They came through a path where gold coins were kept. When they all arrived, the Sultan asked them to dance. All the applicants blushed and refused except one. Then he found the desired man.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : একদা এক দেশে এক সুলতান ছিলেন। তিনি তার কর সংগ্রহ করার জন্য একজন সৎ লোককে নিয়োগ দিতে চাইলেন। তাই তিনি তার জ্ঞানী উজিরের পরামর্শ চাইলেন। তারপর তিনি দরখাস্ত আহবান করলেন। চাকরির জন্য অনেক লোক আবেদন করেছিল। প্রার্থীদের একে একে সুলতানের সাথে সাক্ষাত করতে বলা হলো। তাদের এমন একটা রাস্তা দিয়ে যেতে হচ্ছিল যেখানে প্রচুর স্বর্ণমুদ্রা রাখা ছিল। যখন তাদের সবাই উপস্থিত হলো, সুলতান তাদের নাচতে বললেন। একজন বাদে সকল প্রার্থীই লজ্জিত হলো এবং অস্বীকৃতি জানালো। তখন তিনি কাক্সিক্ষত ব্যক্তিকে খুঁজে পেলেন।

All on a sudden she woke up and told her son with dozing eyes to give her a glass of water. She felt asleep again. The boy responded to his mother’s call and went to the pitcher in the room. He found it empty.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : অনেক অনেক দিন আগে বুস্তামের একটি গ্রামে এক বিধবা ছিল। তার নয় বছর বয়সী একটি ছেলে ছিল। সে তাকে খুব ভালোবাসত। ছেলেটিও তাকে খুবই ভালোবাসত এবং মান্য করত। এক রাতে মা ঘুমাচ্ছিল এবং পুরো গ্রামই গভীর ঘুমে আচ্ছন্ন ছিল। ছেলেটি জেগে ছিল এবং পড়াশোনায় ব্যস্ত ছিল। হঠাৎ মা জেগে উঠে নিদ্রাচ্ছন্ন চোখে ছেলেকে এক গøাস পানি দিতে বললো। সে আবার ঘুমিয়ে পড়লো। ছেলেটি মায়ের ডাকে সাড়া দিয়ে ঘরের মধ্যে রাখা কলসীর কাছে গেল। সে দেখলো যে এটা খালি।

It was the beginning of the summer season. Once a scholar was going to a place by boat. The boatman set sail and the boat was advancing smoothly. The scholar asked the boatman if he had any knowledge of history, geography and science. The illiterate boatman replied in the negative. The wise scholar told the boatman that his life was of no use without the knowledge of history, geography, science, etc. The boatman remained silent. All on a sudden the sky became covered with dark clouds and a storm began to blow. This time the boatman asked the scholar if he knew how to swim. The scholar replied in the negative. The boatman told the scholar that his (s) life was totally spoilt without the knowledge of swimming.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ :  একদা এক পণ্ডিত নৌকায় করে এক স্থানে যাচ্ছিলেন। সময়টা ছিল গ্রীষ্মকালের প্রথম দিক। মাঝি পাল তুললো এবং নৌকাটি সুন্দরভাবে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তি মাঝিকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো তার ইতিহাস, ভ‚গোল এবং বিজ্ঞান বিষয়ে কোন জ্ঞান আছে কিনা। নিরক্ষর মাঝি না-সূচক জবাব দিলো। জ্ঞানী পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তি মাঝিকে বললো যে ইতিহাস, ভূগোল, বিজ্ঞান, ইত্যাদি বিষয়ের জ্ঞান ছাড়া তার জীবনের কোন মূল্য নেই। মাঝি নীরব রইলো। হঠাৎ আকাশ কালো মেঘে ছেয়ে গেলো এবং ঝড় বইতে শুরু করলো। এসময় মাঝি পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো যে তিনি সাঁতার জানেন কিনা। পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তি না-সূচক উত্তর দিলো। মাঝি পণ্ডিত ব্যক্তিকে বললো যে সাঁতার না জানার কারণে তার (পণ্ডিতের) জীবন পুরোপুরি ব্যর্থ।

More than 190 years ago there lived in France one of the greatest soldiers called Napoleon Bonaparte. He was born in 1769. When he was young, he joined the French Army as an ordinary soldier. He rose to high position in the army by his good work and courage. In 1804 he proclaimed himself to be the emperor. France under him was very powerful. He fought several wars with the neighbouring countries and won victories over them. He grew very powerful and soon became the greatest man in the country. He died in 1821. Yet the Frenchmen remember him with due respect.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : ১৯০ বছরেরও বেশি আগে ফ্রান্সে নেপোলিয়ন বোনাপার্ট নামে অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ একজন যোদ্ধা ছিলেন। তিনি ১৭৬৯ সালে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি যুবক বয়সে সাধারণ সৈনিক হিসেবে ফ্রান্সের সেনাবাহিনীতে যোগদান করেন। তিনি তার ভালো কাজ ও সাহসিকতার দ্বারা সেনাবাহিনীতে উঁচু পদে অধিষ্ঠিত হন। তিনি অত্যন্ত ক্ষমতাবান হয়ে ওঠেন এবং শীঘ্রই দেশের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তিতে পরিণত হন। ১৮০৪ সালে তিনি নিজেকে সম্রাট ঘোষণা করেন। তার অধীনে ফ্রান্স খুবই ক্ষমতাশালী ছিল। তিনি প্রতিবেশী দেশগুলোর সাথে বেশ কিছু যুদ্ধ করেন এবং তাদের বিরুদ্ধে জয়লাভ করেন। তিনি ১৮২১ সালে মারা যান। এখনও ফরাসিরা তাকে শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করে।

You might have heard the name of Ibn Batuta. He travelled for more than thirty years. He wrote down all that he saw. He heard the name of Shah Jalal of Sylhet and decided to visit him. He boarded a ship to Chittagong. It took him about six months to reach Chittagong. From there he had to walk for another month to reach Sylhet. Outside the town of Sylhet two persons met him. They said that they were sent by Shah Jalal to receive him. Ibn Batuta became very pleased hearing it.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : তোমরা হয়তো ইবনে বতুতার নাম শুনে থাকবে। তিনি ৩০ বছরের বেশি সময় ভ্রমণ করেছেন। তিনি যা দেখতেন তাই লিখে রাখতেন। তিনি সিলেটের শাহ্জালালের নাম শুনলেন এবং তার সাথে দেখা করার সিন্ধান্ত নিলেন। তিনি চট্টগ্রামের উদ্দেশ্যে জাহাজে চড়লেন। চট্টগ্রাম পৌঁছতে তার প্রায় ছয় মাস লাগল। সেখান থেকে সিলেট পৌঁছানোর জন্য তাকে আরও এক মাস হাঁটতে হলো। সিলেট শহরের বাইরে দু’জন লোক তার সাথে দেখা করল। তারা বলল যে তাদেরকে শাহ্জালাল পাঠিয়েছেন তাকে অভ্যর্থনা জানানোর জন্য। ইবনে বতুতা একথা শুনে খুব খুশি হলেন।

Our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in 1306 B.S (1899 AD) at Churulia in the district of Burdwan. At the age of eleven he showed his poetic genius. In 1914 when the first world war broke out, he wanted to join the army. At last at the age of 19 he joined the army as an ordinary soldier. On his return from the battle field, he gave up the sword for the pen and began to write poems. He wrote a lot of poems, songs, short stories, gajals, novels, etc and travelled all branches of Bengali Literature. His poems inspired our freedom fighters in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. His famous poem “Bidrohi” stirred the whole nation. In 1972, he was brought to Bangladesh from Kolkata and was declared our national poet. He died on the 29 August 1986.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : আমাদের জাতীয় কবি কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম ১৩০৬ বঙ্গাব্দে বর্ধমান জেলার চুরুলিয়া গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। এগারো বছর বয়সে তিনি তার কাব্যিক প্রতিভা দেখান। ১৯১৪ সালে যখন প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরু হয়, তিনি সেনাবাহিনীতে যোগ দিতে চেয়েছিলেন। অবশেষে ১৯ বছর বয়সে তিনি একজন সাধারণ সৈনিক হিসেবে বৃটিশ সেনাবাহিনীতে যোগদান করেন। যুদ্ধক্ষেত্র থেকে ফেরার পরে, তিনি অস্ত্র ছেড়ে কলম ধরেন এবং কবিতা লেখা শুরু করেন। তিনি প্রচুর কবিতা, গান, গজল, উপন্যাস, ইত্যাদি রচনা করেন এবং বাংলা সাহিত্যের সব শাখায় বিচরণ করেন। তার কবিতা বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের সময় আমাদের মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের উৎসাহ জুগিয়েছিল। তার বিখ্যাত কবিতা ‘বিদ্রোহী’ পুরো জাতিকে নাড়া দিয়েছিল। ১৯৭২ সালে তাকে কলকাতা থেকে বাংলাদেশে আনা হয় এবং আমাদের জাতীয় কবি ঘোষণা করা হয়। তিনি ১৯৭৬ সালের ২৯ আগস্ট শেষ নিঃশাস ত্যাগ করেন।

He wanted to educate people. He did not die a natural death. He was killed by the rulers of Athens.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : সক্রেটিস ছিলেন তার সময়ের সবচেয়ে জ্ঞানী দার্শনিক এবং শিক্ষক। তিনি খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ৪৫৯ সালে এথেন্সে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি গ্রীসের এথেন্সে বাস করতেন। এথেন্স ছিল ভাস্কর্যের শহর। সক্রেটিস প্রায়ই এথেন্সের রাস্তায় বের হতেন। তার মিশন ছিল জনগণের মাঝে জ্ঞান ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া। তিনি রাস্তার বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পথচারীদের থামাতেন এবং সহজ সহজ প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করতেন। তিনি জনগণকে শিক্ষিত করতে চাইতেন। তার স্বাভাবিক মৃত্যু হয়নি। তাকে এথেন্সের শাসকরা হত্যা করেছিল।

There was a thief in Saudi Arabia. He used to steal every night. People could not sleep in peace in fear of the thief. They grew so much annoyed and they told it to Prophet Mohammad (Sm.). He asked the thief to give up the habit of stealing. The man bent on his knees and requested the Prophet to tell him to do whatever he liked him (t) except stealing. The Prophet thought for a while and told him to give up telling a lie. He promised to abide by the Prophet’s advice and went away. The man got ready to steal, but was caught red-handed by another man. At last, he gave up stealing.

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ: সৌদি আরবে একটা চোর ছিল। সে প্রতি রাতেই চুরি করত। চোরটির ভয়ে লোকজন শান্তিতে ঘুমাতে পারত না। তারা এত বেশি বিরক্ত হল যে, তারা এটা হযরত মুহম্মদ (সা:) কে বলল। সে চোরটিকে তার চুরির অভ্যাসটা ত্যাগ করতে বললেন। লোকটি হাঁটু গেড়ে বসল এবং নবীকে অনুরোধ করে বলল চুরির পরিবর্তে অন্য যে কোনোকিছু করতে বলতে। নবী কিছুক্ষণ ভাবলেন এবং তাকে মিথ্যা বলা ত্যাগ করতে বললেন। সে প্রতিজ্ঞা করল নবীর কথা/উপদেশ মানবে এবং চলে গেল। লোকটি চুরি করতে তৈরি হল কিন্তু অন্য একটি লোকের কাছে হাতেনাতে ধরা পড়ল। অবশেষে লোকটি চুরি ছেড়ে দিল।

There lived a happy cobbler who passed his days working and singing from morning till night. He had a rich neighbour who was a banker. One day the banker asked the cobbler. “How much a year do you earn?” The cobbler replied, “How much a year, Sir? I have never counted that way. As you can see, I live from hand to mouth but somehow I manage to have three meals everyday and I am happy.” The banker said, ÒI will put an end to your toiling. Take this money and keep them carefully and use them in the time of need.” The cobbler had never seen so much money at a time in life before. He took the money hurried back home and buried it in the earth, but alas! He buried his happiness with it too.

 

 

বঙ্গানুবাদ : এক সুখী মুচি সকাল থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত কাজ করে আর গান গেয়ে দিন কাটাতো। তার একজন ধনী প্রতিবেশী ছিল যে ব্যাংকার ছিল। একদিন ব্যাংকার মুচিকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলো, “তুমি বছরে কত আয় করো?” মুচি জবাব দিলো, “বছরে কত স্যার? আমি সেভাবে তো কখনো হিসাব করিনি। এই যে দেখছেন, আমি দিন আনি দিন খাই কিন্তু যেভাবেই হোক আমি প্রতিদিন তিন বেলা খাবার যোগাড় করি এবং আমি সুখী।” ব্যাংকার বললো, “আমি তোমার কষ্টের দিন ঘোচাবো। এই টাকাগুলো নাও এবং যত্ন করে রেখো এবং প্রয়োজনের সময় ব্যবহার করো।” মুচি তার জীবনে এত টাকা একসাথে কখনো দেখেনি। সে দ্রæত টাকা নিয়ে বাড়ি গেলো এবং মাটি চাপা দিয়ে রাখলো। কিন্তু হায়! সে টাকার সাথে তার সুখকেও মাটিচাপা দিল।
