Kusu Island
Kusu Island has a lot of myths surrounding it. The story mainly revolves around a tortoise, a Chinese, and a Malay man. People once believed that the tortoise transformed into an island to save those two. The men were shipwrecked. Today it is considered one of the best travel destinations in Singapore. Some tourists still visit the Kusu island to worship it. In 1923, the Da Bo Gong Temple was built and dedicated to the Chinese God of Prosperity. People often tie a yellow cloth to the tress of the temple, wishing to fulfill their wishes. A tortoise sanctuary also attracts tourists and travelers will be wondered to see hundreds of tortoise. Travelers can swim in the lagoons and beaches at Kusu Island.
How to go: It is located about 5.6 km off the main island of Singapore.
St. John’s Island
It was also known as Pulau Sakijang Bendera. Saint John’s Island is one of the best Singapore travel destinations. It is situated in the south. It was once used as a quarantine colony for leprosy and a penal settlement for political prisoners and ringleaders of anti-government parties. It was then transformed into a tourist attraction in 1975. Now, tourists can go there for nice swimming in the lagoons, to enjoy beaches. There are some trekking routes and football fields also. Several bungalow chalets and bunks are also available there. It is also an excellent choice for fishing enthusiasts.
How to go: The ferry service is the same as for Kusu, head to Marina South Pier and goes from there.
Sisters Islands
It will take 15 minutes from Singapore City by fast boat. Sister Islands are an outstanding place to picnic and snorkeling. Two islands are separated by a narrow channel. Shady palms and trees will give you shelter.
The names of the two islands are Big Sister island (Subar Laut) and Little Sister island (Subar Darat). The warm, blue waters contain some amusing reefs. There are an amazing variety of fishes, crabs, and other sea creatures. There are also some Long-tailed macaques.
How to go: You can go there by hiring a boat from Marina South Pier.
Pulau Hantu
It means “ghost island” in Malay. Pulau Hantu is a place rich in sea life. More than 100 species of corals along with bamboo sharks, clown fishes, sea stars, seahorses, and turtles are there. Legend has it that, ancient Malay warriors once fought on the islands, and their spirits now haunting the place. However, there is no proof regarding this. It has two islets– Hantu Besar and Hantu Kecil. The island today is increasingly becoming popular as one of the Singapore travel destinations with water enthusiasts. Diving is the top choice. Travelers can also opt for overnight camping.
How to go: There are no regular ferries. You have to hire a boat from West Coast Pier.
Lazarus Island
Lazarus Island of Singapore is serene and uninhabited. If you love cats, then this is the right place for you. On way to Lazarus Island, the bridge linking St John’s Island to Lazarus Island has a lot of cats. You can feed them also. The beaches here are quiet and can provide a great calmness if you want to take a stroll. You can also rent a yacht here. Onboard barbecue is a must-try.
How to go: Visitors have to take the ferry to St John’s Island and walk to Lazarus Island via a link bridge.
