রাজধানীর পুরান ঢাকার সদরঘাট লঞ্চ টার্মিনালের পাশে ফরাশগঞ্জ বাজারে স্মৃতিবিজড়িত ঐতিহ্যবাহী লালকুঠি অবস্থিত। ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্যের ধারক-বাহক এবং সংস্কৃতি চর্চার বিশাল কেন্দ্র ছিল শতবর্ষী লালকুঠি। ১৮৭২ সালে বুড়িগঙ্গা নদীর তীর ঘেঁষে গড়ে উঠেছিল এই লালকুঠি। যার পূর্ববতী নাম ছিল নর্থব্রুক হল। একসময় ঢাকার অভিজাত পরিবারের সদস্য এবং ধনাঢ্য ব্যক্তিদের আড্ডাস্থল ছিল ঐতিহ্যবাহী লালকুঠি । দেড় শতাধিক বছর ধরে ঢাকার ও তৎকালীন ভারতবর্ষের বিভিন্ন অভিজাত শ্রেণির পদচারণায় কালের সাক্ষী হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে লাল রঙের ইমারত বিশিষ্ট এই ভবনটি। ১৮৮০ সালে তৎকালীন ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের গভর্নর জর্জ ব্যরিং নর্থব্রুক এ ভবনটি উদ্বোধন করেন। পরবর্তীকালে তার নাম অনুসারে পরে নর্থব্রুক হল নামকরণ করা হয়। আরো নামকরণ করা হয় বহুল ব্যবহৃত বাংলাবাজার রোড সংলগ্ন নর্থব্রুক হল রোডের। লালরঙ্গে রাঙ্গানো এই ভবনটিকে পরবর্তীতে নর্থব্রুক হলের পাশাপ...
