তখন আমি তিন বা চার। কলকাতার সঙ্গে আমার প্রথম দেখা সেই গুটিগুটি বয়সে। সেটা হয়তো বা উনচল্লিশ বা চল্লিশ সাল। কে জানে আটত্রিশও হতে পারে। সেই বয়সেও কলকাতার যা মুগ্ধ করত আমাকে, তা হল ঘাসের সবুজ গালিচায় ডুবে থাকা ট্রামলাইন। নিঃশব্দে মসৃণ গতিতে যখন ট্রাম যেত তখন মনে হত যেন ঘাসের ওপর দিয়েই বয়ে যাচ্ছে কবিতার মতো। মনোহরপুকুরে আমাদের বাসার সামনেই ছিল একটা ঘোলা জলের পুকুর, তার চারপাশে অনেকগুলো ঢ্যাঙা তালগাছ। সারাদিন বেশ কয়েকটা মোষ জলেকাদায় শরীর ডুবিয়ে বসে থাকত। গাছ ছিল অনেক। আর মনে পড়ে খুব চিল আর শকুনের বাসা ছিল আশেপাশে বড়সড় গাছগাছালিতে। অবারিত আকাশে ছিল চতুর চিলের ধীরগতি মতলববাজ চংক্রমণ। দোকান থেকে শালপাতার ঠোঙায় খাবার আনা ছিল ভারী শক্ত, চিল ছোঁ দেবে কি দেবেই! কতবার যে আমার হাত থেকে তেলেভাজা বা মিষ্টির ঠোঙা কেড়ে নিয়ে গেছে তার হিসেব নেই। চৌরঙ্গি ছিল সাহেবপাড়া এবং সত্যিকারেরই স...
