Brazil greenhouse rising while global emissions fall
Deforestation in Brazil Amazon in first four months of the 2020 was up 55% from 2019, according to preliminary government data.
The Amazon, 60% of which lies in that country, is the world’s largest rainforest and absorbs vast amounts of greenhouse gas.
Brazil could produce 10-20 percent more greenhouse gases in 2020 due to deforestation and farming, compared to the data from 2018, a new study said on Thursday. At the same time emissions globally dropped this year as the new coronavirus pandemic stalled the society.
Brazil environmental advocacy group Climate Observatory reached that conclusion by analyzing current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trajectories in sectors across the economy.
