Diabetic patients have almost doubled compared to the last decade. Obesity, blindness, heart disease, and kidney disease are increasing.
Around 463 million people in the world are suffering from diabetes. Of these, 79 percent live in low- and middle-income countries. About 100,000 people die of this disease every year. On the other hand, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 8.4 million people in Bangladesh are now suffering from diabetes. Millions of people die every year from diabetes-related complications.
2022’s theme has given special importance to diabetes in women. According to doctors, the number of gestational diabetic patients is also increasing due to urbanization and changing lifestyles. Various studies have shown that more than half of women with gestational diabetes later develop type-2 diabetes. Unplanned pregnancies make the child malnourished and have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
Carbohydrates provide energy to the body. After the complex reaction, it becomes a simple molecule suitable for the body’s cells. This molecule is glucose. These glucose molecules are taken up by the cells of the body to produce energy through chemical reactions.
But it takes a hormone to get glucose into cells. That is insulin. The cells of the body have a type of channel through which glucose enters the body.
There is an endless supply of glucose in the blood. But if you have diabetes, the cells remain starved due to a lack of insulin. At this time, if blood glucose increases, the time and concentration of urine increase. The overall condition is called diabetes mellitus. Fasting blood in healthy humans contains 5.6 to 6.1 millimoles of glucose per liter. It increases two hours after taking food.
Genetic factors can also cause diabetes. People with autism or Klinefelter syndrome are also more likely to suffer from it. Diabetes can also be caused by problems with the pancreas. Some also have hormonal problems, Cushing’s syndrome or acromegaly, which are caused by hormones secreted by the thyroid gland, which also affect diabetics. Medications such as glucocorticoids, thiazides, or phenytoin can also cause diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes
The most common problem is frequent urination. It reduces fluid in the body and causes frequent thirst. Again, ‘cellular starvation’ is created in the body. As a result, the body sends a message to the brain that it is hungry. That’s why people with diabetes are hungry. Weight loss despite eating a lot. Fatigue surrounds.
